Roofers Using Your Bathroom? What to Expect During a Roof Replacement

On the day of the roof replacement, many homeowners search:

Do roofers need to use my bathroom?

So, you are not the only one that wonders about bathroom breaks when you have roofers working at your home. Also, some people wonder if they need to prepare accommodations for the roofing crew like water or food.

, so we have plenty to share on this topic. Keep reading to know what to expect on the day of your roof replacement. Learn when a roofer might enter your home and how they deal with bathroom breaks throughout the day.
Do Roofers Come in Your House?

No, roofers do not come into your house to use the restroom when replacing your roof. Even if you offer your bathroom to the roofing crew, most will decline. For some roofing companies, it is against company policy to use a customer’s restroom. That is why you see roofers take breaks throughout the day to cool off and find a public bathroom.

For commercial roofing jobs, the roofing company typically rents porta potties for the job site. Especially when it is a multi-day job.

When Roofers Need to Come Inside Your House

            roof leak repair

, know that a roofer might ask to enter your home. Investigating a roof leak sometimes involves coming inside to check the leaking ceiling.

Locating the leak inside your home helps to pinpoint the area on the roof that requires repair. Still, it is not company policy to use your bathroom when repairing a roof leak.

Should You Buy Roofers Lunch?

Thank you to the kind homeowners that are searching,

Are you supposed to feed roofers?

Roofing is a tough job and homeowners who care are very appreciated. Know that the roofing crew prepares for the day by bringing plenty of water. If they did not bring their lunch, they will buy lunch nearby during a break. Offering your roofers cold waters, Gatorade and lunch are always appreciated, never expected.

Can You Stay Home During the Roof Replacement?

Yes, you can stay home during the roof replacement. Some homeowners enjoy watching the process of the roof replacement and others prefer to arrive home to a brand-new shingle roof.

If you stay home, please be aware of your surroundings throughout the entire day. Avoid walking near the area where the roofers are discarding old shingles and materials. If you must leave your home at any point, ask the foreman when it is safe to exit the home.

How Noisy is Getting a New Roof?

Expect the roof replacement to be very noisy. Specifically, the roof installation is the loudest part of getting a new roof because the roofers use nail guns. If you have a child that is sensitive to loud noises, you might consider leaving the house during the shingle installation. Typically, roofers start the shingle installation after the tear-off and work until sundown.

How Long Does It Take Roofers to Replace a Roof?

Should I Give Roofers a Tip?

Tips are not required, but some homeowners feel compelled to tip their roofing crew after the job is done. Tipping your roofers is a great way to thank them for their hard work. The answer to this question comes down to if you want to.

If you decide not to tip your roofers, supplying cold waters and thanking the foreman are other great ways to show your appreciation.

What Happens if There is Rotten Plywood Under Shingles?

Did your roofers find rotten plywood under your shingles?

Rotten plywood is often the result of a persistent roof leak. In about two-thirds of roof replacements, rotted plywood is discovered after the old shingles are torn off. When this happens, the roofing company notifies you of the findings and the additional cost for replacement plywood.

What Is Included in Roof Replacement?

Generally, a shingle roof replacement implies the tear-off and installation of new materials including:

            Replacement Plywood Decking (If Necessary)

Plywood decking is only replaced if there is rotted plywood discovered during the tear-off. Your roofers haul away old materials and finish the job using a magnetic sweep to remove any fallen nails in your yard.

           Roof Replacement Expectations Conclusion

Knowing what to expect during your roof replacement helps you prepare for the day. Your roof replacement takes place on the exterior of your home, so you do not have to prepare a bathroom for your roofers to use. Direct any questions about the costs of materials, like replacement plywood to your dedicated roofing Estimator or the foreman on-site.

Roofers are hard workers and are focused on completing your roof replacement as fast as possible. If you want to show your appreciation, you can supply cold waters, offer to buy lunch, or say thank you.

is a term used to describe the type of worker that’s probably not the best fit for your roof replacement. “Chuck” is usually seen driving an unmarked pick-up truck and offering homeowners an irresistibly low price for roofing work.

If you hire them, they may hit you with hidden fees or not show up for the job at all. Avoid this type of worker if you’re looking to find a roofer that you can rely on in the long term.

           2. Handyman

Is hiring a handyman for roofing work a good decision?

Your local handyman that does roofing says he’s going to give you a good deal, but is it too good to be true? If you check that your handyman is licensed and insured, you can trust them to handle minor roof repairs such as:

Sometimes homeowners are laxer with their local handyman and hire without checking credentials. Before you hire, think about what could go wrong if an accident were to happen on your property.

            3. Local Roofing Pros

Local pros are family-run roofing companies. They are licensed and insured and may have a small office space. The owner of the roofing company usually gains experience working for a professional roofing contractor before opening their own roofing business. Generally, a pro roofer won't be prone to making mistakes, but you should still look at online reviews to verify a positive customer experience.

1. Licensed and Insured

           You will see the words

            licensed and insured contractor

a lot when you’re looking to hire a roofer. Do yourself a favor and verify that your contractor is in fact licensed and insured before signing a contract. Some of the worst roofing horror stories we've heard coincidentally always involve an uninsured/unlicensed roofer.

Simply search

           "Virginia Contractor License Lookup"

online and enter the contractor’s license number to verify that they are in good standing. If they cannot provide you with their license number or you find that they have an expired license, look for another roofer.

2. Proof of Insurance

Ask your roofing contractor to provide you with proof of insurance. A professional roofing contractor like Virginia Roofing Corporation has many insurance policies that protect employees, the company itself, equipment, and you. Knowing that your roofer is fully insured should give you the peace of mind that you are protected.

3. Website

Does the roofing company have a website?

An online presence like a website is a good sign. Nearly every business has a website, so it’s a red flag when you can’t find one. It doesn't have to be fancy. Sometimes a simple website is enough to prove that they are a reputable roofing contractor.

           4. Online Reviews

Have you ever left a review for a business on Google? People are their most candid and authentic selves when they leave online reviews. You should always read a roofer’s online reviews before hiring and parting with your money.

If you discover a bad review, remember that it is impossible to please every customer. But pay attention to how a company responds to an online complaint; this can tell you a lot about their customer service.

If you’re looking for the lowest price available in Alexandria VA, you’re guaranteed to find it. Just don’t focus on price alone when choosing a roofer. If questions are going unanswered now or customer service is lacking, you might want to look elsewhere. Initial and ongoing customer service for roofing projects is going to be more important in the long term than you might think.

Look for professionalism in a roofing contract. At the very least it should include the shingle brand and color that you’ve picked out. However, other information should be included to protect you and your property.

Carefully review the contract and make sure that everything you agreed upon is written out. Ask questions about anything that’s missing and refer to the table below to see what should be included in your roofing contract.

Payment terms and conditions vary a lot depending on the roofing company. You will have to find the roofer with the payment method that best suits you. If you are uncomfortable that a roofer wants half up front, find a roofer with alternative payment methods. At Virginia Roofing Corporation, you can choose to either finance your roof replacement or pay in full after the work is completed.
Excellent customer service is what separates the roofing companies that thrive from the roofers that only survive. Customer service is extremely important when picking a roofer. You want to hire the Alexandria roofer that’s going to go above and beyond for you.

It’s a bad sign if they’re not answering the phone or are a no-show for a scheduled appointment. You cannot count on that type of roofer to be there for you 5, 10, or 15 years later when you have a roofing issue.

Yes, the number of years in business tells you how stable a company is. If they have at least ten years in business, it is a good sign that they’re not going anywhere anytime soon.

What is a roofing workmanship warranty?

A workmanship warranty is a labor warranty that protects you from specific roofing issues after your roof replacement. For example, if your brand-new roof leaks, your roof installer is responsible for the repair.

It is common for roofing contractors to issue a 2-year labor warranty, but every roofer is different. Ask your roofer for workmanship warranty details or find them in the roofing contract.

The cost for a roof repair ranges from $150 to $450 for a typical job with the average cost per hour ranging from $55 to $95. This includes common roof repairs like repairing a roof leak, replacing missing shingles, and unclogging gutters.

How much does a roof repair cost in Alexandria VA?

Roofers must be careful with this question because it’s one that can only be answered by considering other factors first. For example, you will be asked questions like: Is your roof leaking? What is the extent of the roof damage? How old is your roof? And so on.

Your answer to these questions helps the roofing company determine the extent of the roof damage. Costs vary depending on if you have a small, medium, or large job:

A small roof repair uses only simple tools to complete and takes less than two hours to repair. Expect a small job to cost between $150 and $300.

A medium job will require an investigation of the potential problem. This may take between two and three hours, costing between $250 and $500.

A large job, as you might guess will be the most involved and take anywhere from four hours to a couple of days to finish, plus it may demand special equipment. Expect a large job to fall somewhere between $400 and $2,000.

Roofers are often criticized for their “outrageous” prices for roof repairs. But unless you are in the roofing trade, you wouldn’t know that good roofing labor is expensive. The best roofers will make roof repairs look easy but that’s because they have years of experience.

For more reasons than one – you don’t want a roofing contractor that’s going to cheap out on roofing materials. Some of the worst roofing horror stories we’ve heard involve a homeowner that’s been ripped off by a roofer using cheap materials.

For example, using the right sealant to fix roof leaks makes a difference not only from a quality standpoint but also in terms of longevity. Always check that a roofer is licensed and insured, otherwise you risk ending up with shoddy work.

Large-scale roof repairs such as skylight replacements include a preliminary visit to your residence. A dedicated Roofing Estimator will take the necessary measurements to deliver you a professional estimate for repair.

Do roofers give estimates for minor roof repairs?

It depends. Not all roofing contractors in Alexandria, Virginia will give you an estimate for a minor roof repair. Many roofers prefer time and materials (T&M) contracts for minor roof repairs such as roof leaks.

A time and materials contract is a standard contract used by roofers when there is too little information to provide an accurate estimate.

For example, there are a lot of unknown factors for roof leaks. Without a proper investigation to see what the cause of the roof leak is, we cannot give you a fixed price for material and labor. Most roofers in Alexandria VA charge for the investigation of a roof leak that can take up to one hour.

Rising Lumber Prices Affect Roofing Companies

What can homeowners do as lumber prices rise? Find out how the current surge in lumber prices might affect your roofing project.

What wood you do if you knew lumber prices would skyrocket? Remember at the beginning of the pandemic when basic products like toilet paper and wipes were sold out at the store? For most of us, these shortages have gone away. But for those of us in construction - no dice. All kinds of building products like plywood, insulation, concrete, windows, and doors are in short supply. Prices have exploded and everyone wants to know when prices will come down. if you are a roofer right now, plywood and insulation are the new toilet paper.

What's behind the surge in lumber prices?

There are many reasons, but the big answer is - the pandemic. No one expected the folks that bought out all of the toilet paper and cleaning products to be cleaning all year long. Millions of people stuck inside decided it was a good time to take on home improvement projects. They built home offices, renovated their kitchens, and refinished their basements. The demand for lumber never slowed and people wanted more material than there was to go around.

There is no shortage of jobs in lumber right now when the industry is playing catch up. Today sawmills are doing their best to increase production and meet the increased demand for wood products. Surprisingly, no one anticipated these sky-high prices, including lumber industry executives. 2019 was a historically bad year for lumber, so when the pandemic first hit, decision-makers in the industry assumed that business was going to take a nosedive. The companies that shut down entire mills and sold off inventory were sorely disappointed when the demand for their products tripled just a few months later.

How does the rising cost of lumber affect roofing companies?

Roofing companies are making their purchases sooner than they would have before the pandemic. prices are fluctuating daily and there's not a lot of clarity on building material availability. Purchasing agents at roofing companies are spending hours on the phone negotiating with suppliers and managing material shortages. The roofers that can obtain a decent supply of materials are having to increase security to combat rising thefts. Specifically, plywood and Oriented Strand Board (OSB) are highly desired wood products that are used for the roof decking.

           What is roof decking?

Thinking about the anatomy of a roof, you have your asphalt shingles which are nailed into wooden boards called roof decking. Roof decking, also known as sheathing, is made of either Oriented Strand Board (OSB) or half-inch construction-grade plywood. It is strong enough to hold your roofing crew and the weight of the installed shingles. When exposed to moisture these boards weaken over time and need to be replaced.

How do I know if my roof decking needs replaced?

Roof decking isn't visible, so it's difficult for both the homeowner and the roofer to know if it needs to be replaced. Any damage to the roof decking is revealed during the tear-off so you must be prepared to pay for the added expense. Once the old shingles are removed, any water damage done to the roof decking can be seen. Exposure to moisture often leads to what we refer to in the roofing world as "roof rot." In over two-thirds of roof replacements, we identify at least one area of decaying wood boards that require replacement plywood or OSB panels.

Once the leak progresses to the point where mold and fungi start to grow, it becomes hazardous. Being proactive about roofing issues like roof leaks will help you avoid paying for lumber when it's finally time fo ra roof replacement.

The price of roof decking has gone up over 250% since 2019. For homeowners, this means that you want to avoid damage to your wood decking so you won't have to replace it during your roof replacement. You can do this by reporting leaks to your roofer as soon as you notice them. Waiting too long to fix a leak can cause irreversible damage and toxic mold growth. There are only 3 manufacturer-approved materials that can be used for roof decking: Oriented Strand Board (OSB), plywood, and wood boards. As of 2021, there are no non-wood alternatives to use for roof decking. Know that if your roofer uses anything other than these materials it can void your roof warranty. This means that the manufacturer of your shingles will no longer honor your warranty when you have a warrantable roofing issue. Unacceptable materials that could potentially void your warranty if used for roof decking include cementitious wood fiber, gypsum plank, lightweight concrete, and insulation boards.

It's been the burning question on everyone's lips. Homeowners want to see a steady decline before they start new projects. We finally saw some relief in June when the price of lumber fell just below $1,000 for the first time in months, but we can't expect to see pre-pandemic prices anytime soon.

Summer is the busy season in the construction industry so the price drop that we're all hoping for is unlikely. The good thing is, the mills are not waiting around for trees to grow. There is plenty of raw materials and prices will stabilize once the sawmills catch up to meet the current demand. patience and strong product in the mills is what it will take to get back to normal.

People love the warmth and natural beauty that weathered wood shingles add to an all-white house. So much so that weathered wood shingles are the most searched for color on the internet. Shingle manufacturers like CertainTeed and GAF have picked up on this demand and have produced their own versions of weathered wood shingles. Colors differ slightly depending on the manufacturer so it's highly recommended that you physically place a shingle sample next to your home's exterior to see how it looks. Other factors might push you towards weathered wood shingles such as the trim around your windows, textures on your exterior, and the shade of white on your home.

Do you like the classic look of a white house and a dark roof bringing it all together? This color combination will never go out of style because it follows a general roofing guideline that you want to choose a shingle color that's darker than the body of the house. If you follow this guideline you know that your options are gray, black, and brown shingles. Surprisingly, there are more disagreements made about brown shingles and white houses than any other color combination. Some people think that brown shingles should be avoided if the body of the house lacks warmth. Still, we highly recommend weathered wood shingles for pure white homes because it adds a ton of visual interest.

From a distance you can see that weathered wood isn't a solid brown color. Instead, it's a color-blended shingle. It's base is a deep brown but it's accented with deep red and lighter brown shades. The hints of color in the roof contract with the absence of color in a pure white exterior to create a rustic and strong look.

Off-white is a slightly warmer shade of white and pairs effortlessly with the warm tones found in brown shingles. Together these materials create an inviting and approachable look. You see off-white exteriors and brown roofs a lot in northern Virginia, especially in homes along the waterfront.

A lot of people choose weathered wood for their shingle color because they adore the color variation in the shingles. It gives your roof a textured look and adds a ton of personality to your home. If you have smooth siding panels and want to add even more texture to your home's exterior, ask your roofing estimator about architectural shingles. Because weathered wood shingles are so popular they are available in the most basic shingle style called 3-tab as well as architectural styles. Architectural style shingles have a dual-layered element that are meant to look like natural wood shake roofs.

Cream is a simple yellowish white color that easily blends with many different colors and textures. It's considered neutral but often appears yellow in direct sunlight. With a pop of color on the body of your home, it's best to go with something neutral on the roof like weathered wood.

Cream and brown go really well together because both colors have warm undertones which makes weathered wood an excellent choice. Also, choosing a neutral roof color like brown protects your property's resale value. A newly installed roof always increases a home's property value, but some buyers are picky about roof color. Avoid black shingles because they absorb more heat compared to other shingle colors and tend to look harsh on cream houses.

An architectural trend that's popping up a lot in northern Virginia, especially in home renovations is black and brown window trim. If the dark accents in your home's trim and shutters inspire you to install a black roof then that's an excellent choice. However, you've made it to this article because you're seeking inspiration for something aesthetically-pleasing and moving. We recommend a brown roof on a white house with dark accents because it creates contrast and adds sophistication to the design. Usually a brown roof is the most conventional choice made by people who assume they need to go as neutral as possible to avoid making a mistake. But in this case, weathered wood shingles act as a statement maker. A brown roof is especially a good option if you have a lot of roof and complex slope lines where a black roof would appear too heavy.

White brick houses are something a lot of people dream about. Home builders and house flippers know this, that's why you see so many white brick houses popping up on the market in northern Virginia. It's a classic look that makes the home feel updated and attracts buyers by the handful. Just don't make the mistake of choosing anything other than a neutral colored roof. If you stick to this general rule your options are shades of black, gray, and brown shingles.

Weathered wood shingles are a great choice for a white brick house; especially if you want to incorporate brown into your exterior color scheme. Just be mindful of where you want to see texture on your home's exterior. If the body of your house is brick, installing an architectural roof can be overkill on the textured elements. Shingle brands like CertainTeed and GAF carry weathered wood shingles in 3-tab styles that are economically priced and won't take away from the details in the brick.

How do you figure out which shingle brand is best when all of the major shingle brands produce their own versions of weathered wood shingles? Before you spend time browsing websites like CertainTeed and Owens Corning, contract a roofing company. Ask the roofer what shingle brands they install. It's important for you to know that some shingle styles and colors that you find online are not available in northern Virginia. Also, know that roofers have established relationships with shingles brands so ask your roofer what brand of shingles they install. It is not by accident that shingle brands manufacture exceedingly more neutral colors than anything else. Neutral shingle colors are easy on the eyes and pair well with all shades of brick. Many HOAs specify neutral shingle colors to maintain a cohesive look in the neighborhood.

A classic red brick exterior goes well with nearly every shingle color, especially warm neutrals. For maximum resale value, go with black shingles. Many HOA's require black shingles to maintain a uniform style in the neighborhood. For this reason, CertainTeed's Moire Black and Charcoal are the most popular shingle colors for red brick houses. Avoid light gray shingles and a red exterior which is commonly seen in barn and farmhouse structures.

Earth-tone brick exteriors are still one of the most popular materials used by home builders. Pull from the earthy colors in your brick and pick your favorite shade of brown shingles. A muddy brown roof emulates the natural colors found in soil, trees, and rocks. Look at CertainTeed's brown shingles including Burnt Sienna, Heather Blend, and Resawn Shake.

Roofing maintenance is not optional when you own a historic home. A Historic Preservation Commission is trusted with preserving the historic integrity of old homes in places like Old Town Alexandria. When repairs or replacement are needed, you are limited to the roofing material that was historical appropriate at the time your house was originally built. Popular roofing materials for homes 100 years or older include: genuine slate, standing seam metal, painted or unpainted wood shingles, and flat roofing materials.

Why is it Important to Clean Your Townhouse Gutters?

It is true that townhouse gutters require less maintenance overall, but forgoing gutter cleanings completely is not recommended.

What happens if you never clean your townhouse gutters?

Forgetting to clean your gutters for long periods of time causes damage to your gutter system. As soon as you notice water overflowing out of your gutters and into your yard, it is safe to assume that you have a clog. many townhouse owners neglect gutter cleanings simply because they do not own an extension ladder or know ladder safety.

If you want to keep them in good condition, plan to clean and tune up your gutters once or twice annually. Check for loose or missing fasteners and repair to keep your gutters fitting snug on your townhouse. Overloaded gutters with debris build-up or even heavy snow can cause screws to loosen and your gutters to detach from your home.

Why do townhouses have fewer gutter issues?

Without trees in your yard, you do not have to worry about your gutters getting showered with leaves every Fall. It is rare to see a large oak or hickory tree in the yard of a townhouse like you often see in the yard of a single-family home. Townhouse owners have fewer gutter issues because it takes longer for debris to accumulate in their gutters and downspouts.

Lucky you, a gutter cleaning for a townhouse typically costs less than a single-family home because it takes less time to complete. When you hire a roofer to clean your gutters know that you are paying for the travel time to your residence and the labor for a roofing crew. Cut down on travel time costs by hiring a local roofer. In northern Virginia it is common to find 3 and 4-story townhouses. Due to their height, these houses often require a 60-foot extension ladder to safely access the gutters. A two-man roofing crew and an additional roofer is OSHA required for safe use of a 60-foot ladder. Do not try to DIY a gutter cleaning on a townhouse of this height, contact your local roofer.

Keep pine needles out of your gutters by installing the right gutter guard system and conducting annual gutter maintenance. Homeowners with pine trees know that clearing fallen pine needles out of gutters and off of your rooftop is a lot of work. Some choose to install gutter guard systems to minimize downspout clogs from pine needles, however, know that gutter guards are not the be all end all solution for gutter maintenance when you have pine trees.

In northern Virginia pine trees drop their needles anytime from late Summer to Fall. Gutter guards or not, this is when you need to plan for gutter maintenance. Always consider ladder safety when managing your gutters. If you are not 100% comfortable working on a ladder,

First, check your gutters for pine needles. Remove pine needles by hand or with a leaf blower. Check your downspouts for clogs by doing a water test with your garden hose. If the water overflows over your gutters and into your yard, you might have a clogged downspout. A telescopic water hose attachment may help you reach areas of your gutters from the ground.

If you already have gutter guards installed, check to see if they are working properly. Remove pine needles that sit on top of your gutter guards by running water over them. Periodically, run water over the surface of your gutter guards to clean any mildew, dust, or dirt that builds up over time.

Gutter guards or not, you need to know when to trim your pine trees. The best time of year to prune a healthy pine tree is in the Spring. Trimming the branches, especially the ones that hang over your roof is one of the best things you can do for your gutters.

Installing gutter guards to protect your gutters from pine needles is a great decision. Just know that most gutter guard systems are not effective in catching small-scale debris like pine needles. Look specifically for gutter guards with micro-mesh components when purchasing a gutter guard system.

Do you want better reviews for your apartment building? Positive reviews highlight the pros of becoming a tenant and show acts of good faith for all the public to see. As you know, not all tenants are self-motivated to leave reviews and others are only motivated when something bad happens. Property managers must take advantage of the times when you know you have pleased a tenant and kindly ask them to leave your apartment building a Google review.

Renters are at their happiest when they have been wowed by a leasing manager, property manager, or maintenance team. Take a moment to look at your current Google reviews; how often do you see tenants write about leasing tours and maintenance incidents? From now on, use these interactions and the ones below to check in with your tenants and ask them to leave a review.

Did you pull out all the stops to put on an awesome community event? Whether you got residents together for a boozy "paint and sip" or involved in a charitable food drive, resident events are one of the best times for property managers to ask for a review.

Prospects visiting your leasing center for the first time are filled with excitement and anticipation to see how well your apartment building aligns with their lifestyle. As a property manager, it is your job to personalize the tour based on their wants and needs. After the tour, tell them to anticipate a follow up email or text that includes a link to leave a Google review. Even if the prospect decides not to rent, they will be more motivated to leave a review if they had a positive experience with you during the tour.

One oft he best ways to shine as a property manager is to empathize with renter maintenance issues. Plumbing, pests, and

           roof leaks

are all common issues you deal with as a property manager and they can easily become the focal point for a renter's bad Google review. Tenants are likely to show their appreciation in a Google review when their maintenance requests are promptly addressed.

When you get to know their pet by name -

A well-kept dog park is a major selling point for any apartment building, and it helps if it is mentioned in your apartment's reviews for prospective renters to see. Take a moment to thank your renters for cleaning up after their pet and restraining their animals as they walk through the apartment lobby. Hand out treats and get to know your renters' furry companions. Show that you care, and they will be all paws in when you ask them to leave a Google review.

When you have upped COVID cleaning procedures -

Are you proud of your building's staff for taking the appropriate and accommodating response to the COVID-19 pandemic? Chances are your tenants have noticed and especially appreciate the hand sanitizer stations you have added to the lobby. Express to your renters that they can show their appreciation to the cleaning staff by leaving a Google review.

Are You Embarrassed by the Stains on Your Roof, Too?

When you look up at your roof do you see black stains or dark
streaks? Invest in algae-resistant shingles.

No one enjoys the day you pull into your driveway and look up to see black stains and streaks forming on your roof. At first glance, you think it's just dirt, but any roofer will inform you that the streaks on your roof are a strain of roof algae that is growing and spreading on your shingles.

Unfortunately, algae growth is a problem many homeowners in northern Virginia deal with. The more humid the atmosphere, the more algae you see on roofing shingles and Virginia summers sure are muggy.

It does not matter how expensive your home is when you buy it, if a roof inspection reveals that you have standard 3-tab shingles or architectural shingles, expect to see roof streaks in the future.

Then when it is time for you to sell, having streaks on your roof detracts from your home's curb appeal. Potential buyers see streaks and immediately think to bring down the price or negotiate a credit for a future roof replacement. This is why a new roof is always a good investment, even if you're planning to sell in the future.

So far, we have covered that houses in northern Virginia will ultimately bear roof stains, however I have some good news that I am excited to share! (drumroll, please...)

Finally shingle manufacturers have listened to homeowner complaints about roof stains and have designed a new, algae-resistant shingle. The major difference between other shingles and algae-resistant shingles i the addition of cooper materials, which is an algae-killing metal.

Virginia Roofing highly recommends CertainTeed's new line of

to homeowners who want a roof without stains. The most valuable thing about these shingles is the 10-to-15-year algae-resistance warranty. Also, they come in all styles and are all made with algae-resistant technology.

If your roof is nearing the end of its lifecycle (i.e., nearing 20 years old) I highly recommend requesting a

How do you get rid of moss growing on shingles?

Do you notice moss growing on your shingles? Avoid further damage and rid your roof of moss safely and effectively with these tips.

One of the most puzzling mysteries for homeowners in northern Virginia is when

you start to notice moss growing on your shingles. This is common here because

Virginia’s humid climate and year-round rain create the perfect conditions for

plant growth, even on your roof. Neglecting the first signs of moss on your

shingles can later result in water intrusion and irreversible damage to your roof’s

underlayment. If your roof is affected by moss, keep reading for moss removal

           causes and tips.

A homeowner in nearby Fairfax, Virginia called us with concerns about the moss

growing on a large section of their roof. It did not surprise us to learn that he had

a 3-tab shingle roof that was over 15 years old. That is plenty of time for moss to

cultivate and extend its roots deep into the roof.

To understand the cause, we asked the following question that’s key in

determining why your roof is growing moss, “How much sunlight does your roof

           get?”

If your roof does not receive a lot of sunlight during the day, its highly likely that

your roof will be affected by moss. The shaded sections of your roof that are

consistently dark, damp, or covered by leaves are ideal locations for moss growth.

Sometimes it is due to building design that your roof does not get a lot of sunlight

and other times, shading is a result of the surrounding trees.

Trimming tree branches once a year or whenever needed helps your roof get

more sunlight and avoid new growth. This also helps lessen the amount of leaves

and branches that sporadically fall on your roof and hold in water and ice.

Moss is removed by scraping, but before you do anything consider safety. How

comfortable are you working on a ladder? Can you reach the mossy areas safely?

Start by spraying the moss with a roof cleaner or 50/50 bleach water solution.

This will kill and loosen the moss that is tightly rooted in your shingles. The

following day you should have an easier time scraping the dead moss off your

Never use a power washer to get rid of moss growing on your shingles. It might

seem like a quick fix, but you risk lifting your shingles out of place. Avoid water

cited for new infractions and what you can do to avoid them.

           1. Forget social distancing -

As social distancing keeps us all physically apart, there are no floor decals

on jobsites reminding roofers to keep 6 feet apart when working. Also,

crews travel to and from jobsites together and use the same equipment,

which makes roofing a difficult industry to maintain social distancing.

Employers must think outside of the box when implementing social

distancing or they will face unwanted OSHA citations.

           2. Mask off -

One way to make an already hot day of roofing even hotter is by adding

personal protective equipment (PPE) like N95 masks and respirators.

Studies have shown that when wearing PPE, workers experienced raised

body temperatures and felt warmer. This makes working and removing

masks for OSHA suggested water breaks every 15 minutes more difficult.

Mandatory face masks on the jobsites range from cloth masks and bandana

to PPE, but when roofers fail to wear face coverings at all they could face

           fines over $2,000.

           3. The plan is to have no plan -

Your roofers and office staff should not have to fend for themselves at this

time. Supplying your employees with hand sanitizer and face masks is a

good start to creating your COVID-19 Preparedness and Response Plan, but

it is not enough to avoid an OSHA violation. Use

           4. Self-training & self-supervising -

Everyday social media and the news contribute to misinformation about

COVID-19. Because of this, it should not be left to your employees to decide

if a face mask is necessary or to practice social distancing. It’s the

employer’s responsibility to train employees on mandatory COVID-19

           5. No thermometer, no problem -

It’s not required by OSHA or the State of Virginia, however many businesses

are choosing to administer body temperature checks on employees.

Checking temperatures is another way to ensure the safety of your roofers

It’s true that some roofing issues are scary. However, there’s nothing to be

afraid of when Virginia Roofing is your preferred roofer!

Roofing Issues That Haunt Commercial Roofs.

           1. Petrifying Ponding Water -

A dark, eerie abyss of water that lingers on your roof for more than 48 hours

after rainfall, (called "ponding water") is sinister for your commercial roofing

system. What's really startling is that ponding water magnifies sunlight on your

roof, particularly UV rays which ages roof membrane at frighteningly fast rates.

There's no need to panic, with a hand from your roofer this problem can be

solved with a drain cleaning or additional roof drain installation.

           2. A Cauldron of Foliage -

It's batty to assume that your roof drains are clear and operating normally,

especially if there are trees looming around your building. Beware of rotten

leaves and other mysterious objects that clog your roof drains.

           3. Left for Dead: Abandoned Roof Penetrations -

Ancient satellites and deserted AC units left on your roof is a spell for trouble.

Parts and pieces of inactive roof penetrations can fall over without warning

making punctures. Also, without maintenance, old flashings will eventually

become leaky. Avoid dreadful leaks by capping your inactive penetrations or

           patching back to the deck.

           4. Crusty Caulking -

If your roof's sealant is collecting cobwebs, it is time to re-caulk before anything

starts to leak. The best time to repair caulking is when your roof is bone dry.

           5. Mummified Membrane -

When every rainfall is like a dance with the devil, a roof replacement might be in
